SELF PORTRAIT

colored pencil, Sharpie marker

Final project for Drawing I. This piece is a challenge to the conventional self portrait and is inspired by “methexism,” which focuses on capturing the “energy” or “essence” of the subject rather than directly imitating its appearance. I wanted to highlight the fundamentals of drawing that I learned from this class — mainly, four distinct steps, which are each represented by a different colored pencil. However, I also wanted the piece to be visually surprising and to channel methexism, so I opted for bold, select outlines rather than finishing the portrait in a traditional sense.
