INGLENOOK: COLLAPSIBLE LOUNGE CHAIR
Processes: Furniture Design, Woodworking, Upholstery & Sewing; Rapid Prototyping
Project Brief
In 10 weeks, design and build a chair that:
is collapsible / disassemblable
transitions between states in less than 1 minute
fits within a rectangular volume of at most 3 cubic feet when collapsed / disassembled
weighs less than 40 lbs
Challenges
Hiding hardware & achieving a seamless look
The ARMS — how to incorporate them such that they aren’t fixed to the front legs (for legroom) but also don’t look like they’re floating
And have sufficiently long arm rests
AND be collapsible to fit within volume constraint
Results / Takeaways
Increased confidence in woodworking and a “functional-lounge” chair that checks all my boxes:
Cozy, but not debilitatingly so — the gentle recline allows for comfortable sitting without forcing the gaze upward
Unfixed arms give legroom for not-straight sitting positions, a place for the arms, and corners to lean into
