INGLENOOK: COLLAPSIBLE LOUNGE CHAIR

Processes: Furniture Design, Woodworking, Upholstery & Sewing; Rapid Prototyping

Project Brief

In 10 weeks, design and build a chair that:

  • is collapsible / disassemblable

  • transitions between states in less than 1 minute

  • fits within a rectangular volume of at most 3 cubic feet when collapsed / disassembled

  • weighs less than 40 lbs

Challenges

  • Hiding hardware & achieving a seamless look

  • The ARMS — how to incorporate them such that they aren’t fixed to the front legs (for legroom) but also don’t look like they’re floating

    • And have sufficiently long arm rests

    • AND be collapsible to fit within volume constraint

Results / Takeaways

Increased confidence in woodworking and a “functional-lounge” chair that checks all my boxes:

  • Cozy, but not debilitatingly so — the gentle recline allows for comfortable sitting without forcing the gaze upward

  • Unfixed arms give legroom for not-straight sitting positions, a place for the arms, and corners to lean into
